Born in Copenhagen and raised in Singapore DJ Furen’s musical influences began in Melbourne, Australia in the mid-90s. During his studies there in ‘96, house parties introduced him to Hiphop/Rnb e.g Ice Cube, Redman, Blackstreet, etc. Radio that played Breakbeats e.g Chemical Brothers, Propellerheads, etc instilled an appreciation for electronic music. A search for more beats lead to the discovering of Phuture/Zouk (http://www.zoukclub.com), a trendsetting club in Singapore (even till this day) where DJ Andrew Chow played an eclectic mix of various types of electronic/Hiphop beats. Phuture also held monthly DJ Battles back in the day (1999 - 2003) which sparked his interest in Turntablism. After seeing the infamous video “Its Like That Remix” by Jason Nevins vs Run DMC (R.I.P Jam Master Jay) on MTV, he wanted to dance like that in the video so bad he started looking for stuff about Breakdancing on the internet (56k dial-up). Through Bboying he learnt about the Hiphop culture and the elements which became a major factor in his decision on moving to New York City.
In 2010, he left his job of 5years as a flight attendant and moved to NYC early 2011 to attend SAE (Diploma in Audio Technology) and taught himself how to DJ while leaning music production. With some luck he started interning at long time famous record store Turntable Lab in 2012 which eventually led to a full-time position. In the winter of 2013 he joined Scratch Academy to further his DJing skills and get himself certified officially as a DJ.
His staple selection music genres are mostly throwback music like Disco, Funk, Soul, Breaks, 80s - present Hiphop/Rnb/Pop. He also appreciates Trap, Twerk, Glitch Hop, Dubstep and any form of phat beat. In addition to his other regular gigs around New York City, Furen is currently the resident and c0-creator of Take it back Tuesdays #TIBT (www.takeitbacktuesdays.com), every Tuesday night at Fat Buddha Bar (www.fatbuddhabar.com). And as one of the newest DJs to the roster, Furen is a beast on the club and on the turntables.
